Volume 3: Straight Memory - Exploring the Time Track

Ron explores the potential of human memory and introduces the powerful Straightwire techniques that are a vital part of every auditor's skills. For the first time Ron encounters whole track incidents, and asks the question “Are we knocking on the door of the human soul?” Contains twenty-six lectures given between July 6th and August 4th 1950.

R&D Vol 3Handling the Engram Bank

An article by L. Ron Hubbard - R&D Volume 3

We live in a world which has in it a lot of aberration. And if, as Dianeticists, we suddenly say all is sweetness and light in this beautiful world, we are overlooking the fact that the reason this world needs Dianetics is because it is, to a large degree, mad. If the world were nicely unaberrated and the social cultures understood themselves well, we would not have any use for Dianetics.

And that's why you're studying it, is because the world doesn't run well these days. People are unhappy, miserable, the social cultures are to a large degree incipiently psychotic. . . .

. . .These things exist, therefore Dianetics is valuable and therefore you carry it forward. . . .

. . .Well, here we have this engram bank we're looking at. And it can be live ammunition, but just like gunners play catch with ammunition when they know what they're doing, you can do all sorts of tricks with this, with these engrams. You can do all kinds of things with them.

You can do a lot of things wrong and still get away with it. You do too many things wrong though, and the law of averages is going to catch up with you. And you don't do enough things right and you're not going to get any results.

Now, it's my job to tell you what to do right.

First Standard Procedure

Dianetics Pro Course StudentsThe Dianetics Professional Course students assembled at the Foundation's headquarters

A major technical advance in the codification of Dianetics was the issue of Standard Procedure.

Described in detail in two of the lectures in this volume and included in the first issue of Dianetics Auditor's Bulletin, Standard Procedure provided a series of exact steps for the auditor to follow in picking up a case and carrying it through to Clear.

The direction taken was one of standardization and streamlining, work that Ron would pursue through the years to come, culminating in the complete and precise Bridge to Total Freedom we know today.

See how it all began in R&D Volume 3…

Running Former Lives

It was during this time period where LRH first speaks of encounters with past life track while running engrams.

In the lecture on 22 July 1950, “Running Former Lives,” Ron brings up example after example of past lives and tells you how to audit these.

Or as LRH put it himself:

“You see, back through the research level, telling people to ‘let's go early,’ it was inevitable to run into this if it was there, and it's there and I've run into it.

“And as a matter of fact I have—because it startles people I wasn't ready to investigate it completely. But I've carried enough investigation on it now to find out that you get somatics and unconsciousness off and the cases very often feel very much better for having run such incidents.” – LRH

What You'll Find In R&D Volume 3

The discoveries made during the time period covered in this volume were vital, and paved the way for the spiritual findings that would lead to Scientology

For example, during this time, Ron and his students began to run across past deaths and incidents from past lives during routine engram running

One such case is described in the lecture called “Conception—Sperm Sequence”

The first lecture Ron ever gave on ARC is contained in this volume. Ron defines time and reality and agreements we hold in common that allow us to perceive this universe

Learn the seven steps to diagnose a case, how to open a case and how to run engrams

Ron gives a fascinating story on how he audited someone over the phone and saved his life!

Also, how is it that you can contact an engram from an earlier life when you spoke another language, but when you run it now, you are able to run it in your new language? Learn how this happens in the lecture Standard Procedure Accessibility

Questions Answered in This Volume:

  • What are the factors which most aberrate people in the society?
  • At what age is the analytical mind developed and what does this have to do with processing?
  • What do baby bottles have to do with alcoholics?
  • What is the character of your basic personality? How is it affected by the genetic personality, education and other factors?
  • What is the only factor in a case that can prevent the file clerk from being totally infallible?
